Djokovic just one step away from the dream final
It’s something that everyone agrees with: a match between Rafa Nadal (already qualified) and Novak Djokovic is a dream final. But there’s one more step that needs to be made. Djokovic must defeat Lucas Pouille (a surprising semifinalist) in order to set up a fantastic final against Nadal. Can the Serbian do it?
The simple answer is: of course he can. And he’s got a big advantage. He only played a set and a half in the quarterfinal against Kei Nishikori, as the Japanese decided to retire due to medical problems.
“After a match two nights ago, not to spend too much time on the court, and I’ve had plenty of matches so far this year. I’m in another semi-finals, and I’ll do everything to get ready for that one.” Djokovic said at the post match court interview.
“Being one of the four biggest events in our sport, a Grand Slam, just extracts a lot of motivation and inspiration to play your best always, to get ready, to start the season in the best possible fashion. I have the greatest memories from this court and from fans that have been supporting me over the years” Djokovic said at the press conference.
Djokovic is a six time Australian Open champion and he reached his 34th Grand Slam semifinal after defeating Nishikori.
Mauresmo changed Pouille’s game
The Frenchman, who plays the first semifinal of his career, is coached now by former WTA star Amelie Mauresmo. He started working with Mauresmo in December and the results are incredible.
Pouille was regarded as one of the most promising players in the tour, but he never managed to have steady performances.
However, with 5 title so far and a career high #10 position, achieved in March 2019, Pouille is not that unexperienced. However, despite playing his best tennis ever this year, he’ll have to take it up a notch in the match against Djokovic.
It is the first match between the two players and the odds are favouring Djokovic. He’s the world’s #1, he has the crowd support, because everyone want to see him playing against Nadal and he’s got all the skills needed. It will be very hard for Pouille to deconstruct Novak’s game, but in tennis you never know.
